That's the promise of the AIR ONE from Israeli start-up AIR, which started taking pre-orders this week for its eVTOL - electric propulsion and landing vehicle.

EVTOL was the technical term for what mobility fans have been hoping for since the early 1960s, when TV's George Jetson continued his animated career pushing buttons in Spacely Sprockets.

The low-level license Plaut is seeking is more akin to getting a driver's license than a traditional pilot's certificate, requiring only 15 hours of training and five hours of solo flying. The cost of this type of training, according to Plaut, is a few thousand dollars.

"Most airlines use fly-by-wire," explains Plaut. There is the mechanical connection between, say, the "steering wheel" of the vehicle and the wings and rotors.
AIR One uses what Plaut calls "fly-by-thought." All acceleration is done by sending digital signals to the motor controllers and other components. No mechanical connection.
Digital processing allows AIR to create in a real sense. "We're designing the left side the best way," says Plaut, "it's designed and built the best left side, the way the best pilot does it."

There is no competition in the eVTOL space – from one-man art projects to $4 million airplane taxis – and interest is growing rapidly.
Even Elon Musk wants to get in on the action, saying he's dying to build a supersonic electric vehicle.
Closer to home, in June 2019, Israeli company Eviation Aircraft announced a new electric aircraft, Alice, at the Paris Air Show. A few months later, the company was acquired by Clermont Aerospace.

Plaut is not so concerned. He believes that each new eVTOL "will give people who want to go to the third stage" - the sky.

Besides software, AIR's other innovations are about scale. Other manufacturers can make 20, 50, or even 100 cars a year because most of the work is done by hand, Plaut said, unlike cars automatically.

AIR was created by Chen Rosen, an aviation and UAV enthusiast, in part to address the road problem by moving some of the daily commute into the air, according to Plaut.
"I like that first-time customers use it in the countryside or go down to the edge of town and get an Uber to work," says Plaut. "You can use it to go sightseeing or have a picnic with your friends."
The AIR ONE, with its 150 mile range, is not suitable for a vacation trip from Tel Aviv to Eilat and back... not yet, although the range and performance will be better.
Parking is another reason AIR ONE may not be suitable for urban environments. "The car is big," says Plaut, like two cars parked with plenty of space between them.

However, the AIR ONE has a secret power: It's compact. When folded, it measures the size of a single Ford F-150 pickup truck.
The vehicle has air landing gear and electric wheels to get into the tight spot. "You can't drive on the road; it's too slow," says Plaut, but it can be driven.
